WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?
Blue light is a high energy visible light which can be produced by both natural sources (the sun) and artificial ones (our computer screens & phones).
HOW DOES EXPOSURE TO BLUE LIGHT AFFECT US?
When we are exposed to blue light, our body stops releasing a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin regulates our 'circadian rhythm' - a fancy term for our sleep & wake pattern. When the body releases melatonin, we start to feel sleepy.
With natural sources of blue light such as the sun, this regulates our natural circadian rhythm i.e. when the sun rises, the blue light from the sun stops melatonin production which means our bodies wake up and become more alert for the day - blue light is what tells us to get alert, wake up and be up & at ‘em!
When the sun sets, the blue light disappears, melatonin production starts and the body starts to wind down naturally and feel sleepy ready to rest & recoup over night. Do you remember the last time you had a blissful sleep?
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE EXPOSED TO BLUE LIGHT FROM OUR SCREENS?
With artificial sources of blue light such as our laptop & phone screens, the effect on the body is exactly the same. So if you’re staring into your screen all day and night - that’s going to deplete your production of melatonin, tricking your body into thinking you should still be alert when you’re ready to snooze. A tragic case of Netflix and no-chill.
This can make it difficult to fall asleep and can totally throw your circadian rhythm out of whack.
WHAT CAN CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISRUPTION CAUSE?
Headaches, extreme daytime sleepiness, insomnia, tiredness, decreased alertness, and problems with memory and decision-making are all side effects that have been reported due to a disrupted circadian rhythm. All of which are likely to have a hugeee negative impact on your productivity and overall workplace wellness & mental health. Sound familiar?
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IS DISRUPTED?
Do you watch Netflix in the evening? Do you have late night video calls with a different timezone? Do you like to scroll through IG one last time before bed?
Yes we thought so. We're guilty too! These are all habits that will expose you to blue light at a time when you should be winding down, this will likely disrupt your circadian rhythm and could be the reason you are feeling some of the side effects listed above.
THE SOLUTION: INVEST IN HIGH QUALITY BLUE LIGHT GLASSES
Instead of stopping these things, grab yourself a pair of blue light glasses. They block a lot of the blue light from your screen which means your circadian rhythm is less likely to be disrupted.
Our Franc & Iris family have reported so many amazing improvements since wearing our blue light glasses including:
Headaches have disappeared, less eye strain, easier to wind down in the evenings, increased focus and even less screen-time guilt.
In fact, investing in a high quality pair of blue light glasses has been reported as one of the most simple & affordable solutions that can help improve your quality of life.
A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER:
"When I left my office based corporate job in London and booked a one-way ticket to South-East Asia, I fell in love with the digital nomad way of life! Travelling the world and working online used to be such a pipe dream for me and here I was living it!
There weren't really many downsides except eye strain was a realllll struggle. Working from my laptop on multiple projects, having calls late at night with different timezones really took a toll on my eyes. My evening was constantly occupied by a piercing headache - I knew it wasn't healthy or sustainable.
My health and wellness was vital to achieve results in my new remote career so I knew I had to do something about it. Many of my friends in the digital nomad community were having the same problem and complaining of feelings of burn out, headaches and disrupted sleep.
I set out to find a solution to continue maximising my productivity whilst not having to lower screen time, or continue dealing with the nasty symptoms of digital eye strain or compromise my style! Thus, Franc & Iris was born! High quality blue light glasses for people who live and work online."
