To maintain our lifestyle, a good chunk of our days are spent in front of the screen. These magical screens allow us to bring in $$$ (margarita money), but they also bring in something called blue light. When our eyes aren’t protected against this overexposure, the light can have short-term, and longer-term negative effects.
WHAT’S BLUE LIGHTS DEAL?
Blue light is a high energy visible light which can be produced by both natural sources (the sun) and artificial ones (our computer screens & phones). *Hint: the natural ones, like the sun, have positive effects, like mood-boosting and circadian rhythm regulating. The artificial ones like our digital devices? Not so much.
HOW DOES EXPOSURE TO BLUE LIGHT AFFECT US?
When we are exposed to blue light, our body stops releasing a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin regulates our 'circadian rhythm' - a fancy term for our sleep & wake pattern. When the body releases melatonin, we start to feel sleepy.
With natural sources of blue light such as the sun, this regulates our natural circadian rhythm i.e. when the sun rises, the blue light from the sun stops melatonin production which means our bodies wake up and become more alert for the day - blue light is what tells us to get alert, wake up and be up & at ‘em!
When the sun sets, the blue light disappears, melatonin production starts and the body starts to wind down naturally and feel sleepy ready to rest & recoup over night. Do you remember the last time you had a blissful sleep?
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE EXPOSED TO BLUE LIGHT FROM OUR SCREENS?
With artificial sources of blue light such as our laptop & phone screens, the effect on the body is exactly the same. So if you’re staring into your screen all day and night - that’s going to deplete your production of melatonin, tricking your body into thinking you should still be alert when you’re ready to snooze. A tragic case of Netflix and no-chill.
This can make it difficult to fall asleep and can totally throw your circadian rhythm out of whack.
WHAT CAN CIRCADIAN RHYTHM DISRUPTION CAUSE?
Headaches, extreme daytime sleepiness, insomnia, tiredness, decreased alertness, and problems with memory and decision-making are all side effects that have been reported due to a disrupted circadian rhythm.
